This has already been attempted in the past, and failed miserably. Just think of all of the hundreds of thousands of different devices out there in the world, with a couple hundred added every week. But hey, if you think you can do it, go ahead, prove us wrong :) good luck, greg k-h From brandon at ifup.org Tue Jan 27 16:27:01 2009 From: brandon at ifup.org (Brandon Philips) Date: Tue, 27 Jan 2009 08:27:01 -0800 Subject: Hardware users feedback database In-Reply-To: <7b06a4100811020136w1407407s612cfde98e760201@mail.gmail.com> References: <7b06a4100811020136w1407407s612cfde98e760201@mail.gmail.com> Message-ID: <20090127162701.GA4566@jenkins.ifup.org> On 10:36 Sun 02 Nov 2008, Sander Devrieze wrote: > Create a database with which Linux users of a hardware device can > register. After a new install both Fedora and openSUSE allow users to opt-in to Smolts[1] which collects information on hardware, collects it in a central db and asks for user feedback. However, I find it a bit suprising that they don't provide statistics on the top "not working" hardware. Perhaps someone from that list has some idea about the device or would be interested in helping out. I'm writing "datasheet" because it is pretty useless for a driver developer with no register information whatsoever. Anyone can get access to Premier.intel.com but data sheets on the site are allocated on a per user basis. So, you still need to find someone within Intel to assign you permissions.
