The patches do help.  It's really easy to merge patches.  We always
insist that everyone submitting patches follow the standards so that
when they get to us, they're easy to review and we can apply them
with a macro from our email client.  That's why we seem so picky at
the start.

Don't get more than a few days work away from mainstream.  I don't
send patchsets, so I normally write patches and then let them sit
until the next day, then I review them again with fresh eyes and
send them.
